About the Chadstone Clinic

The Chadstone Clinic was first established by a 2nd generation Chiropractor, Dr Tony Hart in the mid 70’s. His first son, Chris Hart graduated from Cleveland Chiropractic College in 1973 and along with his father were, instrumental in establishing the Chiropractic college that is now at RMIT. Dr Pieter Hart then joined his brother at the clinic and together established a reputation of the Gonstead Chiropractic system at The Chadstone Clinic. Later on around the mid 90’s Pieter then left the clinic to start his own practice. The Chadstone Clinic has now been established as a medical clinic from around the year 2000.

About Dr Joshua Free

Dr Joshua Free completed his Chiropractic studies at Macquarie University in Sydney and joined Dr Chris Hart at The Chadstone Clinic in 2002. It was rather fitting that Dr Free joined the clinic as he was first introduced to the clinic as a child in 1978 and received treatment from Dr Tony initially and then grew up in the clinic under the care of both Chris and Pieter. Dr Free’s family had a long history with the Hart’s as his mother had been physically debilitated due to illness at age 14 and Dr Tony Hart was the only Doctor or practitioner in Victoria that was able to help her condition. From then point on, Joshua’s parents understood the importance of Chiropractic and had taken all of their six children to the Hart’s practice for Chiropractic care. The three sons of Janet and Russell Free (Tim, Quentin and Joshua) then went on to study Chiropractic and have now developed their own practices.

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a safe and natural, hands on approach to healing and health. It can be described as both a Science and a Philosophy. It is a Science as it is based on sound scientific principles and continuous research. It is a philosophy because we know that the human body can heal itself if the underlying problems are addressed. This is in contrast to masking symptoms with drugs or performing avoidable surgery. Chiropractors specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions which are due to mechanical dysfunction of all joints but mainly the spine and the effects on the nervous system. All of us, through our daily lives put stress on our spines. This stress can be PHYSICAL; like a back or neck injury, poor posture etc. CHEMICAL; poor diet, medicines, drugs etc, or EMOTIONAL; job stress, family stress etc. The body will react differently, from mild ache to being in severe pain. But almost always, the spine will "stiffen" in response. The Chiropractor will adjust the spine to restore it to it's natural state of structure function and movement. Once the spine begins to function better, tissues will heal better, the nervous system will return to normal and pain and discomfort should ease.

What's an adjustment?

An adjustment in basic terms refers to the pocedure in which the chiropractor gently and skillfully applies a controlled force from his or her hands to a specific joint in the patients spine. Adjustments for the most part should not hurt. Chiropractors train for years to perform these correctly on patients. There is an associated "pop" sound which is simply a gasseous reaction within the joint of the spine. What the chiropractor is doing is getting the joints of the spine to move correctly and restore the spine to as normal a state as possible.

The Gonstead Method

The Gonstead system of chiropractic was founded and developed by Dr. Clarence Gonstead who graduated a chiropractor in 1923 after a career in mechanical engineering. His devotion and commitment to getting sick people well, led him in his desire to establish a system of finding the major problem and then giving it a specific chiropractic adjustment to restore normal function.
